An Invitation for the Holidays
In the spirit of the holiday season, The Inseus Team is giving ourselves the gift of time and will be unplugging from work and technology whenever possible over these next few weeks. In order to remain fully present and make the most of your time during the weeks ahead, we invite you to do the same!
Maybe you’re not able to commit to a full unplug, but even a few hours here and there—especially during gatherings or celebrations—has enormous impact. Research shows that unplugging from technology leads to increased focus and productivity, improved sleep and well-being, and deeper connections with those around you, and can actually rewire your brain in positive ways.
If you’re looking for a more dedicated practice to help you stay present and connect you to the wonders and joys of everyday life, we recommend Three Good Things. It comes from psychologist Martin Seligman and it goes like this:
Write down three good things that you have experienced in the last 24 hours. The items can be relatively small in importance (“I caught up with my good friend”) or relatively large (“I found out I’m getting a promotion at work”).
After each positive event on your list, answer in your own words the question “Why did this good thing happen?” For example, you were able to catch up with your friend because you called her.
Finally, identify and write down how this event made you feel at the time, and how it’s making you feel now, as you remember it.
We recommend trying to stick with this practice for at least 14 consecutive days and notice how it impacts your outlook on life and your relationships with others. And if you love it (which we’re guessing you will), keep it going after that! In doing so, you will get into the habit of regularly tuning into the sources of goodness in your life, and realize that there’s always something to be grateful for, no matter how big or small.
However you may be celebrating, we wish you peace and warmth in the weeks ahead and we look forward to seeing you in the new year!
Mindfully yours,
The Inseus Team
